Post 2: What is a book?

I believe a book is something that tells a story, it has words written on fresh crisps pages, and as you flips the pages you can smell the story of a new or old book. A book is where each page tells a new exploration. A book is an adventure. When you read a book, you feel attached to the characters, you feel as if you are going through the exact same hardships and struggles. As you are reading a book you escape reality and forget about everything that is going on in your life, it’s like you have two different lives.

Some also ask is a book read on a Kindle, iPad, or phone still the same as a book read on a paper or hard back? My opinion is yes, however it depends on the book. If it a novel and doesn’t have much funk to it, the pages are normal it doesn’t matter where you read it. Personally, I enjoy reading a book on a Kindle. The Kindle does a very good job at replicating the image of a book, the page color looks exactly like the page on paper, it’s a lot lighter (compare a Harry Potter book to a Kindle) and is easier to hold in one hand. The Kindle also doesn’t take up much space in your backpack. However on the other side I argue no the Kindle isn’t the same. If you were to read a comic or a book that has lots of pictures I wouldn’t recommend reading off the Kindle. It’s harder to visual and get the exact same image in your head as you would in a paper or hard back. There’s also those books that have the magical feel to them in a physical book that you just can’t get reading on a Kindle. I found a quote Joe Meno and it has me agreeing with him, it states “For me, a book, in whatever form it takes- hardbound copy, paperback, electronic version, online instrument, text download on a cell phone, even a story read orally- a book is actually a place, a place where we, as readers, still have the chance to engage in active imaging, translating word into image, connecting these images to memories, dreams and larger ideas.”

Whether you read a book on a paper back or Kindle each book is going to portray the same meaning and story. The same suffering and struggles. However, the visual and smell might be a little different. It’s just one preference. A book is an adventure.
